Sprinting From Good to Great – The Ongoing Journey of Stephen Mokoka

Stephen Mokoka, a celebrated South African athlete, continues to shine as both a long-distance runner and coach, remaining connected to his alma mater, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT). Prof Maluleke, during a lunch to honor Mokoka and Zaney Geldenhuys upon their return from the 2024 Paris Olympics, praised Mokoka, saying, "Here is a legendary South African athlete." He assured both athletes, "TUT will be behind them as they sprint from good to great."

Stephen Mokoka holds a B Tech degree in Sports Management from TUT. His remarkable career includes breaking the 50-kilometer marathon world record and winning multiple medals at national and international competitions. From 3000 meters to marathons, Mokoka has represented South Africa on various global stages. He is a four-time medalist at the Universiade and a veteran of three Olympic Games.

Mokoka’s international journey began in 2005, where he placed 9th in the 10,000 meters at the Summer Universiade. Over the years, he earned titles at African Championships, took bronze at the Universiade, and claimed back-to-back South African university titles. In 2016, he competed in the 10,000 meters at the Rio de jenero Olympics, and in 2019, he raced in the men’s marathon at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar. His victory at the Granola Half Marathon in Spain in 2020 further solidified his status as an elite athlete.

Throughout his career, Mokoka has maintained a strong relationship with TUT, expressing gratitude for the university's support. He fondly recalled his former lecturer, Dr Eric Pule, and working with Jazz Mnyengeza. "I hope that the day I become old and gray, I will still be part of TUT," he said, emphasizing how TUT has shaped him into the athlete he is today.

“TUT is the place to be. They do not just invest in the sports department; they look after their student athletes,” Mokoka affirmed. With a big heart and an unbreakable bond with TUT, he continues to inspire future athletes.
