There’s Always a First Time - Even in the BAL

There’s something poetic about “firsts” in sport. They don’t just mark moments, they reveal growth, pressure, and possibility. And in a league like the Basketball Africa League (BAL), where ambition meets continental pride, firsts carry even more weight.

Game 199 of the BAL, just one away from a symbolic 200, delivered exactly that kind of narrative.

For Dar City Basketball Club, this season has been about announcing their arrival. A young club, established in 2022, stepping onto Africa’s biggest basketball stage for the very first time. And what an introduction it was. Wins over Johannesburg Giants (100–70) and Nairobi City Thunder (90–85) didn’t just put points on the board, they signaled intent. Here was a team that didn’t play like newcomers at all. But then reality kicked in, because in sport, a good run always gets tested.

Against Al Ahly Libya, Dar City experienced something new, their first loss of the season. And not just a narrow stumble, but a decisive 118–97 defeat. For a team that had looked so composed in their opening games, this performance felt unfamiliar. Slow start, defensive lapses, and a game that slipped out of reach early. Yet, this is where the story deepens. Because across the court stood a team chasing a first of their own.

Al Ahly, a club with decades of history and multiple domestic and regional titles, came into this game under pressure. Losses to Petro de Luanda and RSSB Tigers had left them desperate, not just for points, but for validation. And so, their first win of the season arrived with authority.

From the opening quarter’s 17–4 burst, Al Ahly made their intentions clear. By halftime, the gap had stretched to 17 points, and despite flashes of resistance, Dar City never truly recovered. Performances from key players, including a dominant showing by 2024 BAL MVP Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. ensured the result was never in doubt.

By the final whistle, history had quietly been made:

• Dar City recorded their first loss of the season
• Al Ahly secured their first win of the season
• Damion Baugh put up 16 points and set a BAL record with 18 assists
• And the game became the highest-scoring in BAL history, with a combined 215 points

All in the league’s 199th game. There’s a lesson in that. We often romanticize winning streaks and consistency, but sport, much like life, is shaped just as much by disruption as it is by dominance. First losses test identity. First wins restore belief. And sometimes, both happen in the same game, to two teams on completely different journeys.

For Dar City, this loss does not erase their rise. If anything, it grounds it. It reminds them, and us, that building a legacy requires more than a perfect start. For Al Ahly, this win is more than just a statistic. It’s a reset. Proof that even after setbacks, there is always a way back.
