Playoff Pressure Changes Everything as Dar City Overcome Petro de Luanda

At BK Arena in Kigali, experience collided with ambition as Angola’s basketball giants, Petro de Luanda, faced a fearless Dar City side determined to continue rewriting Tanzanian basketball history. While Petro entered the Basketball Africa League playoffs carrying the weight of consistency and legacy, Dar City arrived intent on proving that their playoff debut was no accident.

Petro de Luanda remains the only Angolan team to qualify for every BAL playoff edition since the league’s inception, making them one of the competition’s most experienced and respected sides. Across from them stood a Dar City team that had already made history as Tanzania’s first representative to reach both the BAL and the playoffs.

The matchup carried intensity from the opening quarter, with Petro using their playoff experience to edge ahead early. By halftime, the Angolan side held a narrow lead, but Dar City refused to let the game slip away. The Tanzanian side gradually found rhythm in transition and from beyond the arc, turning the contest into a physical and emotionally charged battle.

Petro led 68–58 at the end of the third quarter, though the scoreline hardly reflected the growing tension inside BK Arena. Dar City continued to chip away possession after possession, forcing Petro into uncomfortable situations while feeding off the energy of the moment.

The final quarter belonged to Dar City. Their momentum shift was driven by standout performances from Michael Foster, Nisre Zouzoua, and Uzodinma Utomi, who consistently punished Petro on both ends of the floor. Utomi delivered key baskets during crucial moments, while Zouzoua’s offensive aggression kept Dar City alive whenever Petro threatened to regain control. Foster added composure and scoring efficiency at a stage where every possession mattered.

One of the defining defensive moments came from Anas Mahmoud, whose emphatic block brought the Dar City bench to life and symbolised the team’s defensive resilience in the closing stages. Mahmoud’s presence inside the paint disrupted Petro’s rhythm as the Angolan side searched desperately for momentum late in the game.

For Petro de Luanda, Aboubacar Gakou and Chasson Randle attempted to keep the Angolan giants within touching distance. Gakou battled strongly in the paint, while Randle once again showcased the playoff experience that has defined his BAL career, including his influential role in APR Rwanda’s deep continental run in 2025.

With just 40 seconds remaining, Dar City held a crucial lead and appeared moments away from sealing a statement victory. Petro responded through a quick basket from Randle before adding another point from the free-throw line, briefly reigniting hope inside BK Arena. However, just as Petro threatened to swing momentum, Utomi answered with another vital basket with 18 seconds left, restoring control for Dar City when it mattered most.

When the final buzzer sounded, Dar City had secured an 88–82 victory over Petro de Luanda, sending a strong message across the BAL playoffs. The result underlined how drastically playoff basketball can shift compared to the conference stage. Earlier in the season in Pretoria, Petro had looked dominant in stretches of the Kalahari Conference, while Dar City battled through inconsistencies. In Kigali, however, pressure, execution, and composure defined everything.

The victory adds another chapter to Dar City’s remarkable rise. The club carries symbolic significance for Tanzanian basketball, reflecting the growing competitiveness of the sport across the continent and the increasing parity within the BAL.

The BAL playoffs continue at BK Arena on 24 and 25 May, where teams will once again battle for survival and a place deeper into Africa’s biggest basketball stage.
