African MMA on the Rise as PFL Lights Up Pretoria

A packed SunBet Arena witnessed an explosive night as the Professional Fighters League (PFL) made its Pretoria debut. The card produced ten bouts, with six wins from the red corner and four from the blue, while four South Africans secured victories on home soil.

In the bantamweight main event, Nkosi Ndebele outclassed Italy’s Michele Clemente via unanimous decision. Clemente applied constant pressure, but Ndebele’s sharp counters and composure saw him control the fight and sweep the scorecards. After the bout, Ndebele made his stance clear: any potential challengers would need to reach championship level before earning a rematch.

The co-main event delivered the night’s most dramatic finish. Justin Clarke staged a comeback knockout against Abdoulaye Kane after surviving an early onslaught that left him bloodied. Clarke responded with a decisive counter right hand to seal a first-round TKO, later describing the win as redemption following his December 2025 loss.

Peace Nguphane added to the home success with a unanimous decision win over Yabna N’Tchala, turning the fight around through takedowns and dominant ground control.

In the welterweight tournament, Nigeria’s David Samuel advanced with a first-round submission over Abdelrahman Mohammad, while Guinea-Bissau’s Rivaldo Pereira impressed with a late-notice TKO win against Kunle Lawal. The two now meet in the semi-finals. Angola’s Shido Boris Esperança also progressed with a first-round stoppage of Emilios Dassi and is set to face Nguphane in the next round.

In a closely contested all-Nigerian bout, Juliet Ukah defeated Jane Osigwe via split decision. Despite the win, Ukah questioned the matchmaking, suggesting such pairings could impact fan support when the promotion heads to Nigeria.

Elsewhere, Shadrack Dju Yemba edged a split decision win, Asiashu Tshitamba dominated on the scorecards, and Felista Mutheu Mugo secured a clear unanimous decision victory. One bout ended in a no contest after an accidental eye poke.

The event marked a significant step for MMA on the continent, with PFL Africa continuing its expansion. The promotion now heads to Lagos on June 13, where Nigerian champion Wasi Adeshina will headline in front of a home crowd.
